How Do You Like Your Coffee?

"Black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel, sweet as love." —Charles Maurice de  Talleyrand 1754-1838
speaking of the perfect cup of coffee.

Even those who don't drink coffee know how mysterious and wonderful it is. Just gaze into the deep rich blackness of a cup of jo. You can almost feel the romantic history of coffee and the rich culture it lends us.

coffee beans

Coffee apparently originated in Ethiopia and was used as a food. Arabs made it a drink and shipped massive amounts of the beans through the port of Mocha, of course from whence we get the name. Eventually, the Turks did their magic with it, and Europeans caught the bug bringing coffee to Venice and England, and it is the Dutch we thank for introducing coffee to Java and eventually South America. The British brought the first coffee plants to Jamaica and it wasn't until 1825 that Hawaii's volcanic soil found it's economic mainstay in it's pricey Kona coffee.

All this history leaves us blessed with a diversity of specialty coffee varieties from every part of the world, flavored coffees, dark roast, light roast, espresso not to mention all the things you can do with coffee like cappuccino, latte and coffee ice cream beverages. Coffee is the world's largest traded commodity second only to oil.

Finish your next romantic dinner with a selection of kona coffee, flavored coffee, Jamaican Blue Mountain or any of your favorite other specialty coffees. Always use cold pure water or spring water in a clean coffee brewer or French press, grind your coffee right before brewing and use a full tablespoon of ground coffee to each five ounce cup of water.
